Bureau of Networks and Observations
- Ground-Based Geodetic Networks (VLBI, SLR, IGS, DORIS, gravity field, tide gauges, etc.) provide observations that allow us to better understand the dynamics of the Earth environment and conditions of global change in order to make intelligent decisions for long-range societal benefit;
- Measurements from the combination of these techniques is essential to the development of data products such as:
- the reference frames that constitute the basis for measuring change over time, space and evolving technology, and
- global sea level and ice topography that allow us to understand the Earth’s cryosphere (water and ice);
- The BN&O:
- Advocates for implementation of the global space geodesy network of sufficient capability and geographic coverage to achieve data products essential for GGOS;
- Works with the Services to define requirements and study trade-offs for different options and approaches;
- Serves as a coordinating point for the Services to meet, discuss status and plans, and examine common paths for meeting GGOS requirements
